A horticulturist research scientist named as Yin-Tung Wang has received the highest honors at the Texas A&M University Ag Research Center in Weslaco. At the same time, Dr.Yin-Tung Wang has been named Fellow by the American Society for Horticultural Science(ASHS). Founded in 1903, the Society is the largest organization dedicated to advancing all facets of horticultural research, education and application. Dr. Yin-Tung Wang has been a horticulturist at the Texas A&M Agriculture Research and Extension Center in Weslaco since 1984. He used to work on a variety of ornamental species. Since 1990 his research began to focus on potted orchids and the development of modern production systems. Dr. Dan Lineberger, a professor of horticulture at Texas A&M who nominated Wang to receive the distinction of Fellow from the ASHS, said that Wang’s work has helped make potted orchids one of the hottest-selling commodities in the United States and worldwide. As a result of Dr. Wang’s exemplary work, he has moved orchids from the realm of specialty crop to commodity crop. He also has developed fertilization protocols and addressed cultural requirements for post-harvest handling to maximize sales and customer satisfaction. Dr. Wang has contributed tremendously in helping the orchid industry in Taiwan to market their products overseas and now has collaborative research projects with researchers in Taiwan.
