Dr. Peter Pin-Shan Chen, holding the position of M. J. Foster Distinguished Chair Professor of Computer Science at Louisiana State University, received “Outstanding Research Award” in 2004 from Taiwan Pan Wen-Yuan Foundation. Recommended by Science & Technology Division of Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Houston, Dr. Chen will come back to Taiwan to attend awarding ceremony and receive medals and NT$500,000 value of award.
The Pan Wen-Yuan Outstanding Research Award is set up by Pan Wen-Yuan Foundation to award domestic and overseas outstanding researchers of Chinese ancestry working in electronics, computers, communications or related fields, and Dr. Peter Pin-Shan Chen is the only winner in America. With high criteria and strict examination, the award would only be given to those who are responsible for significant theoretical innovations, advance in experimental technology, improvement of manufacturing process or equipment, or leading a large-scale or integrated project that results in outstanding achievement in the research of electronics, information science, communications or related fields. Because of the significant contribution in the field of computer database and software engineering, Dr. Chen is the recipient of awards in several international prizes.
Dr. Chen is the originator of the Entity-Relationship Model (ER Model), which serves as the foundation of systems analysis and database design and is commonly used by enterprises and governments worldwide. This technology has strong contribution to the development of office automation and storage technology, and this year is subsidized by National Science Foundation (NSF) for US$1,800,000 to develop a security system which could effectively shorten the time to trace the victims.
Dr. Chen is a Fellow of the IEEE, the ACM, and the AAAS. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences, and is the only Chinese in the sixteen “software pioneers” in the "Software Pioneers" Conference. Dr. Chen graduated from Electrical Engineering Department of National Taiwan University in 1968, and gained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science in Harvard University in 1973. He was teaching in MIT, UCLA and so on. Dr. Chen has published over one hundred papers, more than ten articles and books. Furthermore, he is dedicated to develop Taiwan’s science and technology level. He is often invited to Taiwan to share his research experiences, making most effort to develop Taiwan’s science and technology.
